It is fun to carry on traditions of old, but I have always wondered where the tradition of garters came from. I found my answer after a bit of research deep into the past… I found that historically garters were simply narrow bands of fabric used to keep up stockings. Worn by both male and female, garters were often made of leather or heavy cloth and adorned with ribbons and bells. After the creation of elastic, garters had lost their necessity and have since then have been used for fashion and weddings.

Way back in time it was believed that removing an article of clothing from the bride would bring good luck. As that was proven destructive to a brides gown and chaotic, it started to be more traditional for the bride to surrender her garter. Over time and to this day the tradition has it that the groom is the one who removes the garter and tosses it to the unmarried men at the reception.

While it is still a strong tradition for brides to wear garters, more and more brides are choosing to scrap the tradition of removing and tossing the garter as they deem it inappropriate and embarrassing. The choice is up to the bride and groom what they will do at their reception, but they may receive a lot of pressure from family members to keep the tradition alive.
